Choice cord blood processing method

Cryo-Cell offers expectant mothers a choice ot two different cord blood processing methods:

  1. Hetastarch® (HES) processing
  2. PrepaCyte®-CB premium processing

Hetastarch (HES) processing of umbilical cord blood has been the industry standard since 1988, and thousands of transplants using HES-processed cord blood have been successful.

In 2009, a new advanced technology for processing cord blood known as PrepaCyte-CB was developed. Cryo-Cell is the first major cord blood bank to embrace this superior technology, which yields the maximum recovery of healthy stem cells and provides superior red blood cell depletion over all other methods. Our premium processing method is just another example of how Cryo-cell continues to set the gold standard in the cord blood industry.

How is PrepaCyte superior?

Faster patient recovery

As the premier cord blood processing technology, PrepaCyte-CB has been shown to lead to earlier engraftment. For conditions where chemotherapy or other methods that affect the immune system are utilized, an earlier engraftment time means the patient will spend less time in the vital stage where they don't have an immune system capable of fighting pathogens. It can also translate to less time in the hospital and less stress and worry waiting for the patient to feel better. As shown below, recent data show a quicker engraftment time for PrepaCyte-CB processed cord blood units:

Why is PrepaCyte superior?

More of what parents want

Higher stem cell recovery
PrepaCyte-CB recovers significantly more viable stem cells than the processing methods used by other cord blood banks. In a comparison conducted by the St. Louis Cord Blood Bank, PrepaCyte-CB recovered the highest percentage of colony–forming stem cell units (CFUs), capturing 51 percent more than the standard HES1 method as offered by Viacord and 70 percent more than the AutoXpress (AXP)2 method as used by Cord Blood Registry (CBR).
Less of what parents don't

Lower Red Blood Cell Count
PrepaCyte-CB also reduces red blood cell (RBC) contamination. Fewer red blood cells post-processing means fewer toxic side elements. AXP can reduce the red cell count by up to 70 percent45, HES can reduce its volume by up to 82 percent2,3 and Sepax can reduce its RBCs by 84.7 percent33; however, PrepaCyte can get rid of up to 99%2,3 of red blood cell contamination.

  PrepaCyte Sepax HES AXP
CFU Recovery (%) 80.2 62.7 52.9 47.0
RBC Depletion (%) 99.0 84.7 82.0 70.0

The choice is clear. Through our commitment to quality, we are able to offer the best cord blood product when it comes to what matters most. This could lead to better treatment outcomes, less worry and stress and a possible financial savings.
