This advanced space not only increases Cryo-Cell's storage capacity by more than tenfold but also serves as the new home for all long-term stem cell storage moving forward. This transition ensures clients’ stem cell specimens continue to be safeguarded in a cutting-edge, secure environment.

Facility Overview

Cryo-Cell has designed and equipped its Durham facility to meet the highest standards in cryogenic storage, safety, and operational efficiency. The building has defined spaces, one of which is a dedicated cryogenic storage area, for Cryo-Cell’s new biopharma storage subsidiary, ExtraVault. Cryo-Cell has successfully relocated many of its clients’ dewars containing stored stem cell specimens to the Durham site. Clients have been notified of this transition, ensuring a seamless experience.

ExtraVault Dewars

Cryo-Cell is leveraging its expertise to offer high-quality third-party biobank storage services under the ExtraVault brand. This service is designed for academic centers, biopharma companies, and transplant centers that require secure and accredited cryogenic storage solutions.

ExtraVault Key Features:

Cutting-Edge Cryogenic Storage

  • Equipped with multiple rows of double-jacketed, vacuum-insulated steel pipes for liquid nitrogen (LN2) distribution.
  • A massive 13,000-gallon LN2 storage tank ensures uninterrupted cryogenic conditions.
  • Storage capacity for over 200 large LN2 dewars.

Advanced Safety Systems

  • Three independent oxygen (O2) monitoring systems protect facility personnel in case of a nitrogen leak.
  • Safety features include:
    • Automatic shutoff for LN2 tank flow.
    • Central monitoring system alerts staff to any irregularities.
    • Seven O2 monitors connected to the HVAC system, which automatically increases airflow to dilute LN2 in the air if needed.

Additional Storage Options

  • Dedicated storage for over 200 mechanical (electric) low-temperature freezers for samples not requiring LN2 preservation.

Reliable Power and Emergency Systems

  • 300kW natural gas generator ensures backup power for uninterrupted operations.
  • Plans are in place to increase generator capacity to 1.3mW as growth occurs.
  • Automatic fire suppression sprinkler system for additional protection.

Expanding Capabilities Beyond Storage

As the Durham facility reaches full operational status, Cryo-Cell will integrate additional services that reinforce its expertise in biotech innovation and cellular therapy. The 11,000 square feet of clean room space set aside for advanced biologic manufacturing, as well as an additional 11,000 square feet of clinical trial space, broadens Cryo-Cell’s role in regenerative medicine and clinical research.

With FACT and AABB accreditations and membership in the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), Cryo-Cell maintains the highest standards for specimen storage and preservation. These credentials underscore its commitment to regulatory compliance and industry best practices.

Durham Facility and Oldsmar Headquarters: A Dual Commitment

Cryo-Cell’s primary laboratory remains at its headquarters in Oldsmar, Florida where all specimens will be processed. Long-term storage will be at Durham, NC facility. The Oldsmar location and its staff continue to be actively involved in research collaborations and partnerships, ensuring that Cryo-Cell maintains its leadership position in both stem cell preservation and scientific advancement.
