Cryo-Cell Reports Cord Blood Stem Cell Transplant

July 11, 2002

Clearwater, FL – July 11, 2002 – Cryo-Cell International, Inc. (NASDAQ – CCEL), announced today that the Company has recently provided cord blood hematopoietic stem cells for use in a transplant procedure. The stem cells were used in the treatment of acute lymphocytic leukemia, a form of blood cancer. Cryo-Cell reported that the transplant was a pediatric case utilizing cord blood stem cells from a younger sibling. The donor was a perfect HLA match with engraftment occurring within the first several weeks of the transplant. The patient currently is in remission.

The use of cord blood stem cells has become an accepted clinical therapy for the treatment of leukemia and lymphomas and other diseases over the past five years. This use of cord blood for the treatment of hematological malignancies was pioneered in the early nineties. Stem cells derived from cord blood have been shown to have certain advantages over bone marrow including less need for stringent HLA matching and less graft-versus-host disease.

John V. Hargiss, President and Chief Executive Officer stated, “We have a strong sense of fulfillment of our corporate mission of assuring that stem cells stored with Cryo-Cell International by our clients are available for just such medical emergencies. Based upon the information we have received, we are very encouraged with both the excellent progress of the recipient and the prognosis. While it is the policy of the Company not to release confidential information regarding specific client and donor information, we are able to generally describe the application and clinical use of Cryo-Cell processed and preserved stem cells. This information can assist both expectant parents and the medical community in determining the merits of preserving stem cells and their application.”

Also commenting on the transplant, Daniel D. Richard, Cryo-Cell Founder and Chairman Emeritus added, “Since inception our feelings have been ambivalent. Obviously, we were always hoping no one was sick enough to need a transplant. On the other hand, we wanted to ensure the more than 36,000 mothers who have preserved their babies’ cord blood with Cryo-Cell that we were professionally poised to provide the finest service. This should assure everyone who questioned our mission of affordability that when needed, our U-Cord preservation program is second to none.”

Mr. Richard continued, “We are particularly gratified that the family was able to access Cryo-Cell processing and preservation services at no cost under a grant from World Medical Match. This non-profit organization was formed by Mary Jane Barry in the early nineties. This grant was provided for qualifying expectant families who could not afford our service for cord blood processing and preservation. To date, over 180 families have participated in the World Medical Match Program.”

Based in Clearwater, Florida, Cryo-Cell is now the world’s largest and fastest growing U-Cord(TM) stem cell banking firm, offering affordable cord blood storage exclusively for the benefit of newborn babies and possibly other members of their family. Cryo-Cell has pioneered America’s most affordable U-Cord preservation program.
