Cord blood and tissue are collected immediately after either vaginal birth or cesarean section delivery. Since a collection kit is necessary at the time of birth, advanced arrangements must be made.
Umbilical cord blood is easily collected by your caregiver using the umbilical cord blood and cord tissue collection kit and instructions supplied therein. The umbilical cord is clamped and cut in the same manner as it would be for normal delivery of the baby. Using a cord blood collection bag, the staff will draw blood from the umbilical cord. Our cord blood collection bag is sterile inside and out and is the only type of bag that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and as a New Drug Application (NDA). We also use a heparin-free collection process that maximizes stem cell recovery.
Cord tissue is collected after the cord blood has been collected and the placenta has been delivered. A 4”–8” segment of the cord is cleansed and cut to place in a container for transport to the laboratory. The container will be transported along with the cord blood for immediate processing.
The cord blood and, if applicable, tissue are packaged with the mother's blood sample in the special shipping materials provided in the kit. A medical courier will personally pick up your collection kit from your hospital room and deliver it to our facility within 24 to 48 hours, where our staff is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to process, test, separate and cryogenically store your baby's stem cells. You may arrange for the transport of your collection kit by calling Cryo-Cell any time at 1-800-786-7235. Once prompted, select option one. The courier will schedule the pick-up of your collection kit. The kit should be kept at room temperature prior to transport.
